Dolly Parton is one of my favorite musicians. She taught herself how to play guitar and banjo and she has one of the most delightful unique voices I've ever heard. The stories she tells in her songs are all also great to hear, stories about being poor , about her father, mother, being a lady mule skinner and the anthem for 9-5ers.
Dolly Parton-Good ol' Days. This video is from 1970. Just a year off. But this version rules! Fun surfy guitar backing her up.
in the good old days..when times were bad- dolly parton
See this! If you can't find it at your local cult movie rental place with film students behind the counters discussing their late night editing sessions and which processing company allows nudity, the you can find it on youtube in parts. I gave a detailed description of your ( hopefully you still have one) local movie rental spot to entice you to leave the house and spend the couple extra bucks to get some fresh air and help the video rental guys from becoming another travel agency flush (extinct) (gone) (vanished) (forever!)
Gillian Hills is a woman I would still be nervous about walking into a room with my significant other. She's gorgeous, beyond necessary. Just sayin'
Here's a song that I found that I thought was cute
Lavern Baker is amazing!!!! i would have no idea who she was if it weren't for the Hedwig and the Angry Inch "Wig in a box" she says something about putting on some Lavern Baker. Her voice is ..I've already used amazing.....her voice is incredible! She reminds me of Bessie Smith, but faster and upbeat! She was popular from early/mid 50's to the late 60's.
Leslie Gore! I love her so much, she was a college girl, the odd one out always missing her friends, and losing with the boys. She sang in English, French and Italian.
she rules
Sandy Nelson is the shit. He has an abundance of albums and songs to choose from, there will always be something to like, so grab any of the records you see. The song that got me hooked after I was enticed by the title when I was shuffling through 7"s "Teen Beat"- anything with the words teen or teenage in it from the 50's and 60's is usually 90% good with me. So here is my favorite Sandy Nelson song-
I just found this picture, Thai pop sounds interesting though.
duh! if you don't know it, learn it- the Shangri-Las
Sylvia Plath-I love you.
Sylvie Vartan, another lady I want to be. She's adorable, I love her style and her music is pretty darling. She does a lot of french versions of american songs from the 60's which is fun sometime, like "let's dance" that's a pretty good one.
twiggy
Twiggy, you really are something.
